Mice engineered to lack the enzyme, called telomerase, become prematurely decrepit. But they bounced back to health when the enzyme was replaced. The finding, published online today in Nature1, hints that some disorders characterized by early ageing could be treated by boosting telomerase activity. It also offers the possibility that normal human ageing could be slowed by reawakening the enzyme in cells where it has stopped working, says Ronald DePinho, a cancer geneticist at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, who led the new study. “This has implications for thinking about telomerase as a serious anti-ageing intervention.” Other scientists, however, point out that mice lacking telomerase are a poor stand-in for the normal ageing process. The treatment for CTCL depends on the stage at which the disease is diagnosed. The prognosis is extremely variable and also depends on the stage at diagnosis. Early patch stage CTCL can be indolent, with no progression for years and the disease may be cured. Treatment may be directed to the whole body so that undetected lesions will be treated. These lesions may temporarily become more apparent during therapy and then resolve. Treatments for patch and plaque stage disease include application of topical steroids, topical chemotherapy with nitrogen mustard, topical retinoids and PUVA. PUVA is the combination of oral psoralen with UVA light phototherapy. The drug makes the skin more responsive to UVA rays. Patients receiving UVB or PUVA are treated 3 times per week, until remission is achieved. Treatments are tapered. Monthly maintenance therapy may be continued for years. Broad band and narrow band ultraviolet light B can also keep the disease in check and may prevent progression. Topical nitrogen mustard can be used to treat patch or plaque stage disease. The medication is prepared as a liquid or cream and is applied by the patient. The amount is increased as tolerance develops. This therapy can induce long-term remission and even cures. Nitrogen mustard therapy can be used in combination with phototherapy or total body electron beam …

I’m middle aged. Certainly if you went through the obituariaries, which I’ve been doing, you’d find people my age who died.
About 6 months ago I had a serious operation. Cancer was involved, and I’ve gone through quite a bit of treatment, MRIs and all seems to be going exceptionally well.
I’m in a support group, meeting once a month, for people who have had cancer. Many of them share how they feel having fought this ‘monster’ — the birds sing more beautifully! The sky is bluer! Life has more wonder!
Not me. I know I should be grateful but I’m obsessed with the thought of dying. I feel I won’t be around for another 3 years. Every pain I get makes me think the cancer is coming back.
Therapy doesn’t help. I’ve been put on anti-depressants and talk with a psychologist. Nothing helps. There isn’t a day going by I don’t think I’m on my way out.
I thought someone here might have the right words for me. Did you ever feel this way? What’s wrong with me? I feel I should be joyful that things are going well, but I’m filled with doom and gloom.
